Forestry students encouraged to become Eco Champions

250 trees planted to celebrate Parmar Jayanti
The College of Forestry, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni launched a new initiative aimed at encouraging incoming students to engage in environmental stewardship by planting and nurturing native tree species throughout their degree programme. The two day programme during which 250 trees were planted, also marked the birth anniversary celebrations of Dr YS Parmar, first Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
Prof Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, Vice Chancellor and statutory officers of the university paid floral tributes to Dr YS Parmar at the university. Prof. Chandel concluded the planting drive by planting a deodar tree, emphasizing the pride and honour of having the university named after such a visionary leader. He noted Dr. Parmar’s foresight in recognizing that sustainable horticulture and forest resources are essential for future economic prosperity and commended the College of Forestry for educating students on forest conservation.
Earlier during the launch ceremony Dr. C.L. Thakur, Dean College of Forestry, explained that this initiative falls under the theme ‘My Campus, My Forest’, and a tribute to Dr Parmar. He said that the first-year undergraduate students will kick off their academic journey by raising new forests on the university’s vacant land. He emphasized that the goal of the initiative is to raise awareness about forest diversity and contribute to its sustainability. The selected tree species, chosen for their longevity, will be cared for by the students to ensure their survival.
In his address, Director Research Dr Sanjeev Chauhan encouraged students to deepen their understanding of forest diversity and the challenges facing these ecosystems. He highlighted the vital role forests play in maintaining ecological balance and supporting the livelihoods of farmers and industries. Dr. Chauhan called on the students to embrace their roles as eco-warriors and to contribute to keeping the campus both green and clean.
The event saw participation from all statutory officers of the university, heads of departments from the College of Forestry, faculty, staff, and first-year BSc forestry students. A plantation drive near the Dr. L.S. Negi Auditorium was carried out in which 250 deodar and oak trees were planted. Dr. D.R. Bhardwaj provided a demonstration on proper tree planting techniques to ensure the plants’ successful establishment.
