1 min readThe rapid surge in tomato prices that had occurred in the Solan vegetable market is now witnessing a reversal. On Friday, 25 crates of tomatoes from Nashik arrived in the Solan vegetable market. These tomatoes were meant for processing. They were sold for prices ranging up to 20 rupees per kilogram. Meanwhile, local tomato prices have reached up to 33 rupees per kilogram. In the market, a crate of tomatoes fetched 850 rupees. Common and older tomatoes are being sold for prices ranging between 500 and 625 rupees.
Impact of Higher Inflow from Bangalore and Nashik
There has been a decline in prices due to the higher influx of tomatoes from external states like Bangalore and Nashik. According to reports, the arrival of Bangalore tomatoes in the vegetable markets of other states has started impacting the prices of the premium Lal Sona tomatoes of Himachal Pradesh. In a week, tomato prices in the Solan vegetable market have dropped from 2,000 to 850 rupees per crate. However, it is being projected that tomato prices might stabilize for some time.
Grade A tomatoes might remain around 1,000 rupees per crate. Meanwhile, Dr. Ravindra Sharma, the Secretary of the Solan Market Committee, stated that there has been a significant drop in tomato prices. The inflow of Bangalore and Nashik tomatoes in the markets of other states has increased. However, the supply from these states usually lasts only for a short period. After that, there is a possibility of getting better prices for tomatoes from the state.
