This is the first time such a case has been performed in Himachal Pradesh.
This patient had first come to Shimla on 31/12/20 with complaints of pain abdomen and back of 5 days duration, he was evaluated in the department of surgery and on CT abdomen was found to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which is dilation of the main artery aorta due to disease. This is dangerous as it can rupture and cause sudden death.
This patient was sent to CTVS department where surgery by opening up the abdomen was attempted but due to a large number of adhesions, it was not successful.
It was then the surgeons approached Dr Rajeev Marwaha in the department of cardiology, to attempt closure of the aneurysm without surgery.
The case was re-evaluated and another CT was performed and the case was planned.
The material stents are supplied by very few companies so main problem was of availability of trained technician who comes from Mumbai, and the second problem was of finance since this costs around 5 lac rupees, and the patient is a very poor farmer.
The patient is under HIMCARE, where he had some money but an extra amount required which was provided by the patient’s local MLA Shri Narender BRAGTA.
This case was performed today, under local anesthesia, the artery of the left femoral artery route was used and as planned 2 stents were placed and the aneurysm closed.
The final result was very successful and the patient is doing fine.
