Farmers, Agri professionals from Punjab learn about Natural farming

Shimla Mar 13: In a continued effort to promote sustainable agricultural practices, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, recently concluded a three-day training programme on Natural Farming under the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF). The programme, which was held at the Directorate of Extension Education, focused on the environmentally friendly farming techniques for the participants from Punjab. This marks the second batch of training sessions conducted by the Centre of Natural Farming under the NMNF initiative.

The event saw the active participation of key stakeholders, including officials from the Agriculture Department (Project Directors and Agriculture Development Officers), Horticulture Department (Horticulture Development Officers), and the Veterinary Department (Veterinary Officers). Additionally, Block Programme Managers (Farm Livelihood) and farmers from across the state were in attendance.

Throughout the training, university resource persons provided comprehensive insights into the principles and practices of natural farming that have been successfully implemented in the region. Dr. Inder Dev, Director of Extension Education, stressed the importance of adopting sustainable farming methods, not only for the benefit of current agricultural practices but also to secure the future of farming for generations to come.

The training also featured a special session with Shailender Sharma, a progressive farmer from Solan, who shared his personal experiences with natural farming practices. He spoke about how adopting these methods had significantly boosted his income and enhanced his farming practices. Prof. Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, Vice Chancellor of the university, also addressed the participants, encouraging officials to take the lead in promoting natural farming at their respective posts, starting with small-scale initiatives such as kitchen gardens. His call to action aims to inspire a broader adoption of natural farming techniques across the state.

Looking ahead, the university plans to conduct several more training sessions in the coming months. These sessions will continue to equip farmers, scientists, agricultural officials, and representatives from local natural farming institutions with the necessary knowledge and skills to further the cause of sustainable agriculture.
