Entry Tax Row Escalates: Jairam Thakur Urges Govt to Resolve Border Tensions

1 min read

Shimla, March 30, 2026:
Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur expressed concern over escalating tensions due to the entry tax issue, particularly in border areas. He said recent protests and highway blockades reflect growing unrest among people and stakeholders.

Thakur alleged that the situation has arisen due to “hasty and ill-considered decisions” by the state government and urged the Chief Minister to reconsider the policy and find an amicable solution through dialogue.

He noted that tourism stakeholders, taxi unions, and people from neighboring Punjab have opposed the tax, warning that retaliatory actions could disrupt interstate movement and create law-and-order challenges.

Highlighting the impact, Thakur claimed that entry fees for small vehicles have seen a sharp increase and removal of exemptions could adversely affect farmers, horticulturists, and transporters.

He called for immediate talks between Himachal and Punjab governments to prevent further escalation and safeguard public interest.
