Persistent encroachment and misuse of public infrastructure in Jakhu’s Ward No. 17 have sparked concern among residents and civic observers alike. Despite recent repairs to public staircases, shopkeepers continue to display goods along these walkways, severely obstructing pedestrian movement. More alarmingly, commercial vehicles have been found parked directly on the newly constructed stairs, raising fears of structural damage and public safety hazards.
Local residents report that there is now barely any space left to walk. With merchandise spilling over staircases and heavy vehicles resting on fragile infrastructure, even basic pedestrian movement has become a challenge.
Ward Councillor Atul Gautam acknowledged the issue, stating, “We have repeatedly instructed the shopkeepers to clear the area. While they comply temporarily, the encroachments return within days. This time, we are considering stricter action.” However, many citizens remain dissatisfied, questioning both the effectiveness of enforcement and the broader accountability of civic bodies.
“This is public money being wasted,” said one resident. “What’s the point of repairing infrastructure if it’s not protected from misuse?”
As Jakhu remains a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, the continued neglect of public space management not only endangers safety but also undermines urban governance.
