Shimla, Oct 9 – In a significant move towards promoting electric vehicles (EVs) and reducing pollution, the Transport Department has identified 54 locations across Himachal Pradesh where electric vehicle charging stations will be installed. Additionally, 81 separate charging stations will be established along various road routes in the state. This initiative aims to make it convenient for EV owners to charge their vehicles, similar to refueling at petrol stations.

These charging stations will not only be located at petrol pumps but also along state highways and four-lane roads, making them easily accessible to electric vehicle owners. As part of the government’s efforts to promote EVs and create a model state for electric mobility, a total of 135 charging stations will be set up.

The locations for these charging stations have been strategically chosen, including six green corridors. These corridors include the Parwanoo-Una-Nurpur route, the Paonta-Solan-Shimla road, the Parwanoo-Shimla-Rikangpeo-Tabo route, the Mandi-Palampur-Pathankot route, and the Kiratpur-Mandi-Kelang route.

The Transport Department is in the process of completing the necessary formalities to establish these charging stations. Once operational, these stations will not only facilitate electric vehicle owners within the state but also encourage EV owners from other states to visit Himachal Pradesh, reducing pollution and cutting down on petrol and diesel expenses.

Himachal Pradesh has been witnessing a gradual increase in the number of electric vehicles. The Transport Department currently has 2,502 registered electric vehicles, with 79 new registrations in September alone. These electric vehicles consist primarily of 1,896 electric motorcycles and scooters, along with 174 electric cars, 87 electric buses, and other electric vehicles.

According to Aashish Kohli, Additional Commissioner and Secretary, State Transport Authority, the Transport Department is actively working towards making Himachal Pradesh a model state for electric vehicles. The establishment of 135 charging stations across the state is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
