Education Minister Rohit Thakur today released a Pahari song titled ‘Thundal Ki Haarul’, sung by Dinesh Sharma, who hails from Dungi village in Sangrah, District Sirmaur. The song is based on an approximately 800-year-old folk tale from the ancient village of Thundal, which presently falls under Pulwahal area of Chopal assembly constituency in Shimla district.
The Education Minister said that such initiatives play an important role in preserving and promoting our rich culture and glorious history. He mentioned that his ancestors also hailed from Thundal village and this song makes a commendable effort to keep alive the story of migration from the village and other historical events. The song offers a glimpse of the cultural life, traditions and lifestyle of the people from that time.
Rohit Thakur congratulated Dinesh Sharma for bringing out this song in the form of a Haarul (traditional folk form), praised Dinesh DK for composing the music and also congratulated the people hailing from Kathwar village. The song, written by late Meena Ram Sanghaik, is an effort to bring the nearly 800-year-old folk legend to the people.
The song is narrates the heroic saga of the prosperous village of Thundal. The central character of the story is the village headman, Bidan, who has a dispute with his King. The conflict arises when the headman refuses to pay taxes. The disagreement escalates into a devastating war, during which the village is set on fire by the King’s army. As a result, most of the villagers migrate to distant areas of Jubbal like Barthata, district Sirmaur’s Kathwar and other regions.
This folk tale has been passed down and sung by the people of the region for centuries and the new song aims to bring this legendary story to the broader public once again.
