Shimla, January 23, 2025: The Postal Department in Himachal Pradesh has begun trials to deliver mail using drones in remote and snowbound regions. Initiated under the directive of the Central Government, the trial is currently being conducted in upper Shimla. Drones are being used to transport letters from sub-post offices to branch post offices within 5 to 10 minutes, drastically reducing the time required from an entire day.

The trial, which started on November 12 and concludes on January 24, is being executed with the assistance of a private company. Drones, capable of carrying up to 7 kilograms, are delivering mail to villages like Nandpur, Kathasu, Anti, and Jhadag, spanning distances of 7–8 kilometers. On-ground postal staff ensure smooth operations upon delivery. The entire process is meticulously logged online.

Previously tested in Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh, this initiative demonstrates the potential of drones to overcome geographical challenges. If successful, the service will be expanded to other difficult terrains, marking a technological leap in India’s postal system.
