Once again the historic Gaiety Theater brimmed back to life as the members of the Gaiety Theater Repertory, presented a visual treat in the form of a play “Dr.Faustus”. The show turned out to be a massive hit as audiences flocked together not just once but for four houseful shows.
The play Dr.Faustus is a classic and needs no introduction and hats off to the director Kedar Thakur who took the challenge and created the magic not just once but on four different days and that too without a miss.
The story of play is about Doctor Faustus, a talented German scholar who decries the limits of human knowledge, and believes that he has learned all that can be learned by conventional means. What is left for him, he thinks, but magic? He is offered a choice of Christian conscience by a good angel, and the path to damnation by an evil angel.
If we talk about acting then the actors playing Dr.Faustus, the Evil angel left everyone breathless. Mephistophilis in his original appearance actually brought out the gross and repulsive feeling among the audience thereby projecting the talented makeup artist’s skill that the state has and if given the right opportunity where they can reach.
The fact that four sold-out performances were staged and that people kept coming back to see them only serves to highlight the fact that the city’s theatrical culture was not dying; rather, it was being kept at bay by poor plays and subpar acting. This production showed that there is still hope for Gaiety to be transformed back into the “Mecca of Theatre” and not only a historic structure for guided tours with the help of visionary leaders and hardworking artists.
