Democratic Values Undermined in Shimla MC, Alleges Jairam Thakur

2 min read

Shimla, March 3: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has strongly criticized the Congress government over the recent political developments and administrative turmoil in the Shimla Municipal Corporation.

In a press statement issued from Shimla, Thakur accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of undermining democratic values to benefit his close associates. He alleged that established norms and constitutional practices have been sidelined in the functioning of the Municipal Corporation, calling the recent actions “undemocratic” and an “insult to public mandate.”

Thakur further claimed that BJP councillors were removed from the House in an unconstitutional manner, asserting that the move reflects the government’s intolerance towards opposition voices and public concerns. He termed the step as a violation of democratic traditions and said the BJP would raise the issue both inside and outside the House.

Raising the issue of women’s representation, the Leader of Opposition alleged that as per established norms, the Mayor’s post in the Shimla Municipal Corporation was expected to be rotated in favour of a woman after two-and-a-half years. However, he claimed that the government altered the arrangement to retain a preferred individual in office, thereby denying eligible women councillors their rightful opportunity. He described the move as contrary to the principles of women empowerment frequently highlighted by the ruling party.

Thakur also alleged administrative stagnation and irregularities in development works within the Municipal Corporation and said the government should not ignore public sentiment. He cautioned that democratic institutions must function with transparency and respect for opposition participation.

On the occasion of Holi, the Leader of Opposition extended warm greetings to the people of Himachal Pradesh. He said the festival of colours symbolizes harmony, unity, and social goodwill, and expressed hope that it brings happiness, prosperity, and strengthened bonds of brotherhood across the state. He also appealed to citizens to celebrate the festival safely and in an environmentally responsible manner.
