Umang Foundation Appeals for Immediate Rescue
Shimla, March 3, 2025 – An elderly homeless man, Balwant, living in dire conditions on the streets of Sunni Bazaar, about 50 km from Shimla, needs immediate rescue and rehabilitation at the Basantpur Old Age Home, urged Ajay Srivastava, President of Umang Foundation.
Prof. Srivastava has written to Kiran Bhadana, Director of the SC, OBC & Minority Affairs Department, highlighting serious human rights violations and the threat to Balwant’s life. The director has assured action for his rescue and rehabilitation.
Local shopkeepers and residents, including teacher Alpana Gupta, have been providing him warm clothes, food, and medical aid. However, given his worsening health and inability to work, shifting him to an old age home is necessary.
Balwant, originally from Bilaspur district, had been working as a laborer in Sunni for years. With age and illness, he has been forced to live on the streets but refuses to share any information about his family.
Prof. Srivastava urged the administration and the public to report cases of homeless elderly, destitute women, orphaned children, or mentally ill individuals to ensure timely rescue and rehabilitation.
