Shimla: Today, in a unified voice, Congress former soldiers’ department’s in-charge and vice president, retired Major General Dharamvir Singh Rana (AVSM, SM, VSM), Brigadier T.S. Thakur, and others expressed widespread outrage over the central government’s decision not to recruit 1.5 lakh youth who cleared physical and medical exams into the army. Led by AIISIS (All India Indian Soldiers and Ex-Servicemen Confederation) former soldiers’ department chairman Colonel Rohit Chaudhary (retired), hundreds of young protesters were peacefully demonstrating at Jantar Mantar for quite some time.
It is noteworthy that for years, the wandering youth, who had been wandering from pillar to post, seeking an audience with the central government and the defense minister regarding their demands, have been disappointed. When their pleas fell on deaf ears, exhausted and frustrated, they resorted to a 1,100-kilometer ‘Satyagraha Yatra’ from Champaran, Bihar, to Delhi in a Gandhian manner. Upon reaching Delhi, they sought justice and met with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to discuss the injustices they were facing. Rahul Gandhi assured them of Congress’s continuous support and vowed to fight for their rights from the streets to the Parliament.
In the ongoing struggle for justice, Colonel Rohit Chaudhary, along with AIISIS, led a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar, raising the voices of over 1.5 lakh youths. However, this morning, amidst the convoy of the Vice President, Delhi Police, following signals from the central government, arrested Colonel Rohit Chaudhary and several other youths advocating for army recruitment at different locations. Colonel Chaudhary has been detained at the Tughlaqabad police station.
The silent approach of the central deaf government towards the demands of former soldiers has sparked widespread condemnation. The Congress former soldiers’ department in Himachal Pradesh, along with the AIISIS, is united in demanding the immediate release of all arrested youths and ensuring justice for them. The anger and resentment over the arrest of former soldiers and youths are spreading across the country. If necessary, the entire nation’s former soldiers and youth are ready to hit the streets, and if required, launch a jail bharo andolan (fill the jails movement) to overthrow the central government. The responsibility for arresting and detaining former soldiers and youth across the country will lie squarely with the central government.
