Emphasis on strengthening awareness activities; 458 violators fined ₹44,650 under COTPA
Chamba, October 21 — Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal chaired a review meeting of the Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign 3.0 and Saksham Abhiyan initiated under the aegis of the Health Department and Chamba Police. He directed officials to intensify awareness and information activities to curb tobacco use effectively.
The DC instructed that awareness drives be organized not only in schools and colleges but also in technical and paramedical institutions to sensitize youth about the harmful effects of tobacco. Block Development Officers were asked to ensure the implementation of the campaign’s parameters in at least ten panchayats within each block.
He further directed that no tobacco products be sold on properties owned by Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, or Zila Parishads. Panchayat Secretaries will now facilitate tobacco vendor licensing in rural areas, while VLCC committees will be formed at the Panchayat level.
Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav informed that 458 violators were fined ₹44,650 under the COTPA Act, and shared details of ongoing anti-drug awareness initiatives under Saksham Abhiyan.
So far, 34 shopkeepers have been issued tobacco vendor licenses. The proceedings were conducted by District Programme Officer (Health) Karan Hiteshi, who shared progress updates under the campaign.
