Cyber Crime Rising in Bilaspur: Police Stress Awareness as Key Defense
1 min read
Bilaspur, Sept 15 – With smartphones and the internet making life easier, cybercriminals are exploiting technology for large-scale frauds. District Bilaspur too is no longer untouched, as multiple recent cases highlight the growing threat. Police Superintendent Sandeep Dhawal warned that scammers are adopting new tactics daily, making public awareness the strongest safeguard.
New-age frauds include digital arrest scams, where criminals pose as police or government officials on video calls with fake backdrops to extort money. A recent case in Bilaspur involved fraud of over ₹20 lakh. Brand impersonation, fake mobile apps, online investment scams, and Ponzi schemes are also on the rise. Loan apps offering “cheap interest rates” are duping people of their savings.
Phishing via fake APK links such as SBI Yono UPDATE.apk or PM Kisan.apk is being used to clone phones and steal personal data. Deepfake videos and audios are emerging as new tools of deception. Police cautioned against giving SIM cards or bank accounts to others, as it may lead to legal trouble.
SP Dhawal urged citizens never to share ATM pins, OTPs, or banking passwords, avoid clicking suspicious links, and only download apps from verified platforms. In case of fraud, victims should immediately call the National Cyber Helpline 1930 or contact the local cyber cell for timely intervention.
