Community Radio – Bridging Communities with Inclusion and Awareness

Dharamshala, September 18, 2025 – A two-day Community Radio Awareness Workshop, jointly organized by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, and SMART (Seeking Modern Applications for Real Transformation), concluded at Dhauladhar Hills Resort, Dharamshala.
Archana Kapoor, Founder Director of SMART, emphasized that “community radio is the only medium that is truly local, participatory, and inclusive in its reach.” The workshop provided insights into the establishment, technical know-how, and regulatory processes of community radios, showcasing their role as tools of empowerment, inclusion, and development.
Shilpa Rao, Director, Ministry of I&B, highlighted the importance of women-led organizations and shared that additional grants are being provided to them. Ministry officials Amit Dwivedi and Vinay Dahiya elaborated on policy guidelines and the Community Radio Support Scheme.
Representatives from Radio Gunjan, Hamara MSPICM, Radio Chitkara, Radio Amlela ki Awaaz, and Radio Nagar shared success stories of how community radios have empowered rural communities by spreading awareness, encouraging participation, and solving local issues.
Participants also visited Radio Gunjan, where experts from BECIL demonstrated technology and equipment. Interactive sessions such as the “Power Walk” encouraged attendees to design community-driven programs.
Archana Kapoor reiterated that “the real strength of community radio lies in community ownership.” Participants expressed that the workshop clarified processes, inspired them to set up new stations, and reinforced that community radio is not just a medium of information but a transformative platform for accountability, local governance, and inclusive development.
