CM Sukhu’s Government Shocks Farmers with Inflated Power Bills: Jairam

Shimla, May 11, 2025 — Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has lashed out at the Congress-led Himachal government, accusing it of betraying farmers by drastically increasing power bills for irrigation. Thakur alleged that the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government, which came to power promising 300 units of free electricity, has instead turned into a “government of surcharges,” burdening even small farmers with bills five to six times higher than before.
He cited specific examples, including a farmer from Una whose bill rose from ₹669 for 605 units in April to ₹3445 for 591 units in May. Thakur said hundreds of such complaints are pouring in from across the state, indicating systematic exploitation. He criticized the government’s insensitivity and demanded immediate rollback of the hike, warning that the farmers won’t tolerate such injustice.
Thakur further accused the government of abandoning welfare policies and increasing charges across services—from bus fares to healthcare schemes—saying the administration is acting with “arrogance instead of empathy.”
