Shimla | October 23, 2025:

BJP’s senior state spokesperson Trilok Jamwal has accused the ruling Congress government in Himachal Pradesh of deliberately delaying the Panchayati Raj elections, saying the party fears defeat at the grassroots level. He said the government’s reluctance to proceed with the polls shows its lack of confidence in the people’s mandate.

Jamwal pointed out that Himachal has 3,577 panchayats, and elections are due this December, as the current representatives’ term ends on January 23, 2026. The State Election Commission is constitutionally bound to conduct elections before this date. Since heavy snowfall occurs in Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, Sirmaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur during January, the Commission intends to hold voting in December. However, Jamwal alleged that the Congress government is even challenging the Election Commission, something unprecedented in the state’s history.

He further said that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh have repeatedly claimed elections will be held on time, yet the reservation roster has not been released so far, creating uncertainty. Citing High Court guidelines, Jamwal noted that the reservation roster must be issued at least 90 days before the start of the election process to allow time for public objections and judicial review. “The Congress government has created a situation where only its will prevails — not the people’s,” he remarked.

On a positive note, Jamwal thanked the Central Government for releasing ₹51.79 crore under the 15th Finance Commission to strengthen rural healthcare infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh. He said the funds would be used for setting up new primary and community health centres, and for procuring beds and medical equipment. The funds have been allocated under three components — ₹16.77 crore, ₹31.33 crore, and ₹4.13 crore respectively.
