Shimla, September 12: A confrontation occurred on Tuesday morning between ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) and SFI (Students’ Federation of India) activists at Samahil Chowk, Himachal Pradesh University, as the new academic session commenced. The altercation escalated quickly, with both student organizations accusing each other of initiating the violence.

According to the police, a heated argument broke out between the activists of the two student organizations early in the morning at the Chowk. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in physical altercations. Several students sustained injuries during the brawl, with two of them suffering serious injuries. The injured students received medical attention immediately.

In response to a complaint from both ABVP and SFI, the Baluganj police station filed a cross FIR (First Information Report). To prevent further violence and maintain order, the police deployed personnel at the scene throughout the day.

These incidents of violence during the beginning of each academic session have become a recurring problem at Himachal Pradesh University. Both student organizations typically assemble at the university’s main gate and Samahil Chowk to welcome new students and attempt to attract them to their respective groups. However, clashes often occur between these organizations.

As a result of such violence in the past, the previous Congress government had imposed a ban on student union elections a decade ago. The authorities are likely to closely monitor the situation to prevent any further incidents.
