Chester Hill Controversy Deepens: Jairam Thakur Alleges Big Cover-Up by Sukhu Govt

Mandi, April 5: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur intensified his attack on the Sukhu-led Congress government over the alleged Chester Hill land scam, accusing it of trying to shield those “being exposed” in the case.

In a statement issued from Mandi, Thakur alleged that instead of ensuring a fair and transparent investigation, the government is attempting to suppress evidence and protect the guilty. He termed the situation “deeply unfortunate” and against democratic values.

Referring specifically to the Chester Hill मामला, Thakur said that although the government withdrew a controversial letter issued by the Chief Secretary following public and social media pressure, several serious questions remain unanswered. “Withdrawing the letter does not absolve the government of responsibility,” he asserted.

He questioned the circumstances under which the letter was issued and subsequently withdrawn. “What was the compulsion behind withdrawing the letter so hastily? Was it issued beyond jurisdiction?” Thakur asked, raising concerns over transparency and intent.

The Leader of Opposition further questioned who directed the issuance of the letter and what its real objective was. He also criticized the decision-making process, alleging that orders were passed in haste without hearing both sides, and questioned whose interests such unilateral actions were meant to serve.

Targeting the Chief Minister, Thakur said it was surprising that despite the issue being widely reported in media and social platforms, he appeared “unaware” of the developments while continuing to defend officials. “This raises serious doubts about the role of the government in the entire episode,” he added.

Thakur warned that withdrawing the letter appears to be a mere “cover-up,” while the real issue lies in the intent and process behind such decisions. He asserted that the opposition is committed to taking the matter to its logical conclusion and ensuring accountability.
