While in the time of catastrophe, when people from all walks of life are rallying to extend their support to provide succour to the disaster hit families in the State, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and his family has demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the cause. Of late, the Chief Minister contributed a substantial sum of Rs. 51 lakh from his personal savings from his three accounts towards the Aapda Rahat Kosh-2023 and now his 88-year-old mother, Sansar Devi, has also shown solidarity with a generous donation of Rs. 50 thousand from her savings, much appreciated by all.

During a recent discussion, the Chief Minister said, “to help the underprivileged and donating has always been a part of my nature, dating back to my school and college days. When I witnessed the young children contributing during this disaster from their pocket money, and breaking their piggy banks, I voluntarily came forward to donate according to my capacity and I do feel gratified.”

He said that volunteering for a charity, is inborn and it stands in good stead for karmic rewards. My people need me in this hour of distress and I have a much bigger family now, he said.

Sh. Sukhu also recalled his earlier contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, underlining that he prefers to keep such gestures a low-key affair, saying, “I do not seek any recognition or attention for the same.”

Even before his current role as Chief Minister, Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, as an MLA, made significant contributions to the fight against the COVID-19 virus. He generously donated Rs. 11 lakh from his fixed deposits, in addition to his one-year salary.

This monsoon season, there have been unprecedented losses to both human life and property in the state. The death toll during the season stands at 441 with damage to property both public and private exceeding Rs. 12,000 crore. The impact on livelihoods of the people, basic infrastructure, and tourism activities has been severe, however, the unity and resilience displayed by the people of Himachal Pradesh is commendable. The leadership of the Chief Minister during these difficult times serves as an inspiring example of solidarity and compassion, even recognized by institutions like the World Bank, Niti Aayog, and Former Chief Minister, Shanta Kumar.

Besides, it is an example of its kind in the country, where the Chief Minister has donated his own and his family’s lifetime savings towards helping the people in need.
