Chamba, January 13: Once again, the state of Himachal Pradesh has experienced mild tremors from an earthquake. On Saturday, slight tremors were felt in the Chamba district, situated near Jammu and Kashmir. According to the Meteorological Center in Shimla, the earthquake occurred at 1:16 PM for a few seconds. The intensity of the earthquake measured 3.1 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter approximately 9 kilometers below the earth’s surface. Currently, there have been no reports of damage to life or property in the district due to the reduced severity of the earthquake.
Chamba has witnessed several instances of earthquake tremors in recent years, although the intensity has remained relatively low. Earthquakes have been occurring intermittently in various districts of the state, including Chamba. The seismic activity has been closely monitored, and statistics from the National Center for Seismology indicate that Himachal Pradesh has experienced around 25 earthquakes in the past year. While people have felt these tremors, the majority of them registered on the Richter scale between 3 and 4.
Last year, earthquake occurrences were distributed throughout the state, with Chamba district and its surrounding areas experiencing the majority of seismic events. It is worth noting that Himachal Pradesh falls under highly sensitive seismic zones 4 and 5. In 1905, a devastating earthquake in the Chamba and Kangra districts claimed the lives of over 10,000 people, highlighting the seismic vulnerability of the region.
