BJP Accuses Congress Govt of Hijacking Relief Material: Jairam

1 min read

Shimla, August 18 – Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has accused the state government of attempting to “hijack” the disaster relief material sent by BJP and the people of Himachal Pradesh. He said that instead of facilitating aid, government-protected officials pressured that relief be handed over to SDMs and Tehsildars.

Thakur claimed that ration flown in by helicopters was diverted to the homes of favoured Congress leaders. He asserted that the government was trying to muzzle the Opposition with lawsuits but must instead accept its failures.

Highlighting lapses in relief and rehabilitation, he said that despite claiming losses of over ₹1,000 crore, the government released only ₹2 crore in multiple installments. Roads remain closed even after more than one and a half months, he added.

Thakur alleged that Congress leaders turned the disaster into an “opportunity” for corruption, demanding tenders and funds for roads reopened through people’s support. He further stated that the government used the disaster as an excuse to shift the Horticulture College, delayed interim relief payments, and filed cases against 62 affected individuals within minutes.

Calling for temporary shelters for the displaced, Thakur praised many honest officials but warned that the Congress infighting and negligence are worsening the suffering of victims.
