Bishop Cotton School Commemorates Excellence at 164th Annual Speech Day
2 min readOn the 8th of November 2023, Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, proudly commemorated its 164th Annual Speech Day, a momentous occasion that not only honored the illustrious history of the institution but also celebrated the outstanding academic achievements and commendable character of its students, fostering a sense of unity within the school’s community.
The event featured an impressive parade that culminated with an inspiring flag unfurling ceremony conducted by the esteemed chief guest, Mr. Rohit Thakur, the Education Minister and a Member of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The Prefects led this grand procession, proudly bearing the school flags, while the resonant notes of the Bishop Cotton School anthem resounded, reminding all in attendance of the school’s timeless motto to “Overcome Evil with Good.” The NCC boys stood smartly and attentively throughout, adding to the grandeur of the occasion.
Highlighting the day were the Speech Day Prizes, presented to students from Class 3 to Class 12. The entire school erupted in applause and jubilation as the Chief Guest distributed these accolades. The coveted ‘Cock House Shield’ was clinched by Lefroy House, marking its triumphant return after 23 years. Lefroy also secured both academic cups for the Junior and Senior schools, in addition to the esteemed Bayliss Shield. It was particularly noteworthy that Mr. Rohit Thakur, a former student of Lefroy House, expressed his admiration for the school captain, Yatish Bansal, commending his exceptional leadership qualities.
During his address, Education Minister Mr. Rohit Thakur conveyed his immense honor at revisiting his alma mater, where he spent his formative years from KG to 12th grade as part of the batch of 1992. He imparted a significant message to the gathering of Cottonians, emphasizing the need to contribute to the transformation of India from tradition to modernity, to becoming a diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-lingual, and socially responsible nation of the future.
Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, recently achieved notable rankings, securing the second position nationwide and first in Himachal Pradesh as the best boys’ boarding school (Vintage Legacy, Education World ’23). Additionally, the school was recognized as the top performer in “Quality in Education” within Himachal Pradesh in the ICSE Category, based on the North India’s School Merit Awards survey conducted by Education Today ’23. Furthermore, it has obtained accreditation as a Cambridge International School, thereby initiating GCSEs and A’Levels.
