1 min readSuccessful Ascent of Mt. U.T Kangri (6070m) by Entire Team
On August 5th, 2024, the Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, marked a historic achievement as all nine students and two instructors from the Jubilee Mountaineering Club successfully reached the summit of Mt. U.T Kangri in Ladakh, standing at 6070 meters (20,031 feet). This marks the 25th year of the school’s mountaineering expeditions, with this year being the first time in history that the entire team summited together.
The team began their ascent at 3 am, navigating the treacherous terrain in the early hours before reaching the peak. BCS Director Simon Weale praised the achievement, highlighting the dedication and effort required to make the journey and the expedition a success. He noted the rarity of such accomplishments, with only a handful of young people in India having reached similar heights.
Expedition leader Amod Talwalkar expressed amazement at the entire team’s success, especially in the Silver Jubilee year of BCS mountaineering history. The nine-member team embarked on their journey nine days prior, after the 165th Founder’s Day celebrations, heading to Leh, Ladakh, for their adventure. They spent a week acclimatizing to the high altitudes, preparing rigorously for the climb.
Bishop Samantaroy of Amritsar blessed the expedition, and the team’s success is a testament to their hard work and perseverance. The annual mountaineering expedition is a significant event for BCS, challenging the students to push their limits and develop their character.
