The Gaiety Theatre recently showcased *Baayen*, a celebrated play directed by the esteemed Usha Ganguly, as part of the National Level Theatre Festival in collaboration with the National School of Drama Repertory, New Delhi. Based on Mahasweta Devi’s powerful story, Baayen explores the tragic life of Chandi, a rural woman wrongfully accused of witchcraft and ostracized by her community. Through Chandi’s tale, the story sheds light on societal superstitions and the devastating impact of stigma on marginalized women.
Usha Ganguly’s design choices, especially the staging and lighting, transported the audience into Chandi’s world with vivid authenticity. A standout element was the pond scene, which depicted water ripples projected onto the wall behind the actors, creating a mesmerizing visual metaphor for Chandi’s isolation and the ripple effect of her ostracization. This use of light and shadow served as a compelling narrative device, enhancing the mood and grounding the audience in the protagonist’s inner turmoil.
The lead actress delivered a compelling performance, seamlessly embodying Chandi’s pain, anger, and fleeting moments of hope. Her portrayal was dynamic, capturing the protagonist’s emotional journey with precision and depth. The cast supported her effectively, with each actor contributing to the atmosphere of tension and dread that defines Baayen’s thematic core.
This production of Baayen succeeded in drawing the audience into a world fraught with injustice, casting a stark light on societal superstitions that persist to this day. The combination of Usha Ganguly’s visionary direction, the artistic staging, and the powerful performances rendered this classic play both timeless and profoundly relevant.
