Himachal Pradesh is set to introduce a modern and transparent system for vehicle fitness certification with the launch of Automated Testing Stations (ATS) starting February 1. The first station will become operational at Ranital in Kangra subdivision, marking the state’s first fully automated vehicle passing facility.

Under the new system, vehicles will no longer require inspection through Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVI). Instead, fitness tests will be conducted using advanced machines and digital technology, ensuring checks on brakes, headlights, suspension, pollution levels and other technical parameters in a completely automated manner. The initiative aims to save time, improve efficiency and curb corruption.

The state government is also expanding the network of automated testing stations across districts. New stations are planned in Nadaun (Hamirpur) and Haroli (Una), along with private sector facilities at Kangoo in Mandi, Bairi in Bilaspur, Paonta Sahib in Sirmaur and Rajpura in Nalagarh, Solan.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri said the automated system would bring greater transparency and convenience for vehicle owners while modernising transport services in the state.
