1 min read
Established under the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology, and Environment in 2016, the Appropriate Technology Centre (ATC) in Shahpur has steadily become a key player in promoting technological advancements in the region. Though initially struggling due to a lack of staff and resources, the center’s prospects were revitalized with the support of the state government under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and local MLA, Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania.
Today, with six of the seven sanctioned posts filled, the center is not only operational but also thriving with the latest infrastructure, including a fully equipped conference hall. ATC Shahpur is dedicated to introducing modern scientific techniques to improve the lives of people, especially in rural areas. Offering training in various sectors such as earthquake-resistant construction, water-powered LED lamps, and products made from pine needles, the center serves Kangra, Chamba, Hamirpur, and Una districts.
Under the leadership of Sunanda Pathania, the center is empowering local communities, especially women, by providing training in eco-friendly practices like traditional plate-making from leaves (pattal). The Rajiv Gandhi Center for Pattal and Doona Making, an integral project at ATC, offers tools and stipends to trainees, providing economic opportunities while promoting sustainability.
With models such as low-cost water filters and solar dryers on display, the center offers practical solutions for everyday needs, encouraging people to adopt these innovations. Through its efforts, ATC Shahpur is becoming a beacon of self-reliance, fostering skills, and driving socio-economic growth in the region.
