Anurag Thakur Highlights Role of Digital India and UPI in Building a Developed India

Himachal Pradesh, February 28 – Former Union Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Singh Thakur emphasized the crucial role of Digital India and UPI in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047. Speaking at a private event, Thakur stated that Digital India, launched on July 1, 2015, has transformed India into a digitally empowered society, expanding financial inclusion and employment opportunities.

Thakur criticized opposition leaders for initially mocking UPI and digital transactions, but now witnessing its widespread adoption, even among small vendors and local artisans. He credited PM Modi’s leadership for making digital payments accessible to every citizen, strengthening the country’s economy.

Discussing India’s fintech revolution, he highlighted that UPI, launched in 2016, has become the world’s largest digital payment platform. In January 2025, UPI transactions surpassed 16.99 billion, amounting to ₹23.48 lakh crore, marking an all-time high. He urged financial institutions to expand partnerships with fintech firms to further enhance digital inclusion globally.
