Agriculture Students of BUEST Visit IMD Shimla for Meteorology Exposure

Shimla: Students from the School of Agricultural Sciences (SOAS) at Baddi University of Emerging Sciences and Technology undertook an educational visit to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, on February 23, 2026. IMD functions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and plays a vital role in weather monitoring and forecasting in the country.

The visit aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application in the fields of meteorology and sustainable agriculture.

During the visit, students were guided by technical officers who provided detailed demonstrations of specialized instruments used for meteorological data collection and analysis.

Among the key instruments showcased were sunshine recorders and manual as well as automatic rain gauges used for monitoring radiation and precipitation. Students were also introduced to temperature measurement tools such as maximum and minimum thermometers, Stevenson screens, and soil temperature sensors used for temperature profiling.

In addition, they learned about wind monitoring instruments including wind vanes and the integrated Automatic Weather Station that helps record real-time weather data.

The visit was coordinated by Mr. Gurwinder Singh and facilitated by Mr. Parikshit and Mr. Shiv Ram. Through this exposure, students observed the real-time recording and analysis of weather parameters, gaining a deeper understanding of the role of accurate meteorological data in improving agricultural planning and promoting sustainable farming practices.

The educational tour proved to be highly beneficial, enhancing students’ practical knowledge and providing valuable insights into the application of meteorology in agriculture.
