1 min read

Shimla, June 15, 2025 — In a story that embodies courage and determination, Dr. Etika Chauhan from Kotkhai, Himachal Pradesh, has earned her Ph.D. from Himachal Pradesh University despite living with a brain tumor and severe visual impairment. She is among the rare visually challenged individuals in the state to achieve this academic milestone.

Dr. Etika, currently a lecturer in Political Science at the Government Boys School, Matiana, completed her doctoral research on *“NGO Intervention and Women Empowerment: A Case Study of Shimla District”* under the guidance of Professor Anupama Kanwar in the Department of Public Administration.

Her journey has been far from easy. Diagnosed with a brain tumor in Class 4, Etika gradually lost her vision due to the condition. Multiple surgeries and continued follow-ups at PGI Chandigarh have been part of her life. However, her academic performance never wavered—she consistently secured top marks through school and college.

She completed her schooling from Jubbal and Lakkar Bazaar, did her B.A. from RKMV Shimla, and earned her Master’s and Ph.D. from Himachal Pradesh University, relying on online resources, large print materials, and magnifying tools.

Dr. Etika credits her success to her parents, her guide Prof. Kanwar, friends, and Umang Foundation, whose support was instrumental in navigating the challenges of higher education. Her father Jagdish Chauhan is a retired SBI employee, and her mother Rita Chauhan is a homemaker.

Etika’s journey is a beacon of inspiration for countless young girls, especially those battling physical limitations.
