Srinagar, April 22, 2025: Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament from Hamirpur, Anurag Singh Thakur, during his visit to Jammu & Kashmir, emphasized the growing support for the “One Nation, One Election” concept. Addressing a public gathering in Srinagar, he highlighted the BJP’s nationwide campaign advocating synchronized elections and its benefits for the country.
Anurag Thakur stated, “There is a strong national sentiment in favor of ‘One Nation, One Election’. This formula will save both time and the massive expenses incurred in conducting separate elections. An estimated ₹1.5 lakh crore was spent during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which could be saved and reinvested into development, contributing nearly 1.5% to India’s GDP.”
He added that the current government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in performance, reform, and transformation. Unified elections would ensure uninterrupted governance, reduce the time wasted due to frequent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, and allow officials to focus on their core responsibilities.
Thakur also pointed out that simultaneous elections were once a reality in India between 1952 and 1967. However, repeated fall of governments due to Congress’s political motives disrupted the system. He called the new bill a reformative step that can reduce policy paralysis and economic burden on the government.
