Mandi, August 25: Frustration erupted among hundreds of drivers who have been stranded near the Pandoh Dam and Kanchi Mod for the past four days. On Friday, these drivers gathered on the road, raising slogans against the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and expressing their anger by chanting slogans.
These drivers, along with their goods-laden vehicles, have been stuck at this location for the last four days. They were en route from Kullu-Manali with fruits and vegetables, but due to the closure of the road near the Pandoh Dam and Kanchi Mod, they have been stranded here. Even during the heavy rainfall on August 22 and 23, they were stuck here, protecting their vehicles from potential damage caused by falling rocks.
Around 150 vehicles are stranded near Pandoh Dam, 150 near Kanchi Mod, and more than 400 vehicles are stuck between Moon Hotel and Hanogi. While the local administration and people are providing support to the drivers, they are furious at the NHAI. They allege that NHAI is being lax in restoring the road, leading to their continued entrapment. Although they have access to food, the perishable goods loaded on their trucks are deteriorating, which will result in significant losses for them.
They have warned NHAI that if the road is not restored soon, they will resort to a hunger strike. Earlier, the highway near Kanchi Mod was completely cut off, and an alternative route was provided by the administration via Pandoh Dam. However, this route has also been closed now. Additionally, the foreign land on which these vehicles are parked has been significantly damaged, making it even more hazardous for the drivers. This is the reason why they have started a protest against NHAI, demanding prompt road restoration.
Following the drivers’ protest, Mandi DC Arindam Chaudhary reached the scene along with NHAI’s Project Director Varun Chari. After speaking with the drivers, they assured them of swift road restoration. The officials also issued immediate directives to NHAI officials on the spot for the speedy resumption of the road.
