1 min readSolan, December 3: Fortis Hospital Mohali’s Department of Head and Neck Oncosurgery has successfully treated numerous patients with head and neck cancers, offering them a chance to lead healthy lives.
A recent case involved a 42-year-old man with non-healing wounds on the left side of his mouth, which had spread to his jaw bone, causing severe difficulty in chewing and speaking. After being diagnosed with Stage 4 oral cancer via MRI, Dr. Kuldeep Thakur, Consultant in Head and Neck Onco-surgery, performed a partial cheek and gum resection along with neck dissection, removing all cancerous tissue without facial incisions.
Dr. Akhil Garg, Consultant in Onco-Reconstructive Surgery, reconstructed the patient’s mouth using skin from his left thigh. The patient recovered smoothly and was discharged five days post-surgery, with complete tumour removal confirmed.
Another case involved a 62-year-old man diagnosed with Stage 4 jaw bone cancer. Dr. Thakur successfully removed the cancer through a neck dissection, while Dr. Garg reconstructed the jaw using bone from the patient’s leg. Both patients resumed normal lives soon after.
Dr. Thakur emphasized the importance of collaborative treatment for optimal outcomes, while Dr. Garg’s expertise in reconstructive surgery ensures functional and aesthetic recovery for patients.
