Solan, August 26, 2025 – BJP state spokesperson Vivek Sharma has strongly supported the “Grave Offences Bill” presented by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, citing alarming statistics on crime in politics.
Quoting the ADR (Association for Democratic Reforms) report, Sharma revealed that out of 763 MPs (Lok Sabha + Rajya Sabha), 306 face criminal charges, including 194 with serious offences. Notably, 150 MPs are accused in cases of crimes against women. Similarly, 1,861 current and former MLAs have 4,474 criminal cases pending.
Sharma said the bill ensures judicial transparency while preserving the dignity of constitutional posts. Even if an accused legislator gets bail within 30 days, they can retain their ministerial or constitutional post, but denial of bail would compel them to step down. “If politicians don’t trust even the judiciary, then whom will they trust?” he questioned.
He recalled the 2013 Supreme Court ruling (Lily Thomas vs Union of India) which struck down the Representation of People Act provision that allowed convicted lawmakers three months to appeal, mandating immediate disqualification for sentences of two years or more.
Emphasizing the need for reform, Sharma urged all political parties and especially the youth to support the bill. “If corrupt leaders go to jail, honest people will enter politics. This law is not to punish rivals but to safeguard the nation’s future,” he added.
