The dairy sector in Himachal Pradesh is emerging as a model for rural transformation, with over ₹6 crore already mobilized under the government’s dairy development initiatives—a number expected to grow as more cooperative societies join the scheme.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, in a recent address, underscored that the government’s dairy reforms are not limited to increasing milk production or improving statistics. Instead, the focus is on creating a robust and sustainable rural ecosystem that enhances farmers’ livelihoods, promotes women’s empowerment, and strengthens cooperative institutions.
“Our goal is not merely to produce more milk, but to build a value-driven dairy economy that uplifts rural communities, especially small and marginal farmers,” Sukhu stated. He emphasized that dairy farming is being positioned as a pillar of economic self-reliance in rural areas, providing both income stability and community development.
The Chief Minister elaborated that under the current reforms, cooperative dairy societies are being modernized with better infrastructure, training, and access to markets. Simultaneously, women have been given a central role through self-help groups and cooperative leadership, ensuring their active participation in the rural economy.
He added, “We are seeing the real impact at the grassroots level—farmers are earning more, women are leading cooperatives, and villages are becoming economically vibrant. This is the new face of Himachal’s rural economy.”
CM Sukhu also noted that the success of these reforms stems from the synergy between policy, governance, and community participation. With an emphasis on transparency, accountability, and decentralization, the dairy sector has become a vehicle for social and economic change.
He concluded by saying, “Himachal’s dairy model is more than a policy initiative—it is a vision of inclusive and sustainable development. It offers a blueprint for other states to reimagine rural empowerment through cooperative and community-based governance.”
As the state progresses on its path towards self-reliance and rural resilience, the dairy sector continues to stand out as a beacon of committed governance and people-centric development.
