Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and the Himachal Pradesh State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (HIMCOSTE) jointly organize a two-day workshop on “Geological Hazards/Disasters (Geological Hazard/Disaster) and Landslides in the Western Himalayan Region of Himachal Pradesh” on October 5th and 6th, 2023, at Hotel Peterhoff, Shimla. The Honorable Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The mountainous regions of the Indian Himalayas are prone to various natural disasters. This year, during the monsoon season, the state has witnessed extensive landslides and significant loss of life and property due to heavy rainfall in just two months.
To address these issues comprehensively and find solutions, especially related to earthquakes and landslides, a two-day brainstorming workshop has been organized for the Western Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh. The main objective of this workshop is to discuss and deliberate upon various issues and challenges under the purview of earthquakes and landslides in this region. It aims to reevaluate policies and plans to safeguard the state from these natural calamities as the hilly towns and regions of Himachal Pradesh are highly susceptible to such events.
Mr. D.C. Rana, Director of the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), mentioned that this two-day workshop will include practitioners, administrators, researchers, policymakers, and experts from Himachal Pradesh and other states who will share their expertise on earthquakes and landslides and present detailed insights on disaster prevention and solutions.
Mr. Satpal Dheeman, Additional Secretary (Environment, Science & Technology Department), highlighted that the two-day workshop comprises four technical sessions in which various experts will present their views and engage in extensive discussions on earthquakes and landslides.
Mr. Satpal Dheeman, Joint Secretary of HIMCOSTE and the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), urges the citizens of Himachal Pradesh to participate in this two-day workshop, which will be broadcasted live on social media platforms, YouTube, and will be directly accessible on the SDMA and HIMCOSTE websites. He invites all to be part of this important event aimed at enhancing awareness and preparedness for geological hazards and disasters in the region.
This workshop serves as a vital platform for experts, researchers, and policymakers to collectively address geological challenges and strengthen disaster management strategies in the Western Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh.
