Environment Day celebrated at UHF Nauni

The Department of Environmental Science, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni organized World Environment Day on 5th June, 2022 on the theme ‘Only One Earth’. The event was held under the Institutional Development Plan of the university.
To mark the occasion, various activities such as campus cleanliness drive, parthenium eradication programme, declamation and slogan writing competitions were organized for raising awareness on environment conservation. Over 135 participants including faculty of the Department, IDP staff, SPACE club members, NSS volunteers and students of the College of Horticulture and Forestry took part in the event. Professor Satish Kumar Bhardwaj, Head, Department of Environmental Science launched the programme and pointed out that this Environment Day marks 50 years of the 1972 United Nations Conference on Human Environment which initiated global agreements to collectively protect the environment.
He advocated that we all need to have empathy towards nature and must work every day to safeguard the valuable environment. Dr. KK Raina, Principal Investigator, IDP was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function. He encouraged the students about their environmental responsibilities and pointed out that our ancestors gave us the philosophy of living in harmony with nature. He urged everyone to work towards restoring and safeguarding the planet. Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh, Public Health Specialist-DPO, Regional Hospital Solan and member of the National Panel on Public Health and Climate Change was the Guest of Honour. He sensitized the students about waste and its repercussions on human health.
During the event, a cleanliness drive was undertaken and parthenium plants were uprooted by the participants. In the afternoon, declamation and slogan writing competitions were also organized on the theme ‘Only One Earth- Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature. Sumita Sharma, B.Sc (Horticulture) 3rd year bagged the first prize in declamation contest, while Spardha Sharma of B.Sc (Forestry) was awarded first prize for writing slogan ‘Ped katne aaye hai kuch log mere gaon mai, abhi dhoop tez hai keh kar baithe hai ussi ki chaon mai’. Riya Kakkar, Itika, Amisha, Wanika Bhardwaj, Sourabh Dhiman and Reanna K Sangama also won prizes in the competitions. Dr. SK Bhardwaj gave away prizes to the winners and stressed the need to regularly work for environmental conservation by sincerely respecting the blessings of nature in the form of various ecosystem services and processes operating in nature for making our living comfortable.
