JUIT, Waknaghat, December 12, 2023 – The SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) JUIT Chapter orchestrated an enlightening seminar, the 6th Distinguished Speaker Seminar, featuring Dr. George Biros as the esteemed speaker. Renowned as the W. A. “Tex” Moncrief Chair in Simulation-Based Engineering Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Biros shared his profound insights on “Fast Algorithms and Machine Learning.”
A distinguished authority in computational engineering, Dr. Biros holds professorial appointments in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. With a notable career journey, he has served as an Associate Professor at Georgia Tech and an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. The seminar delved into the realm of Scientific Machine Learning (SciML), elucidating its significance and distinctive features compared to conventional machine learning. Dr. Biros navigated through Reduced Order Models (ROMs), unraveling their theoretical foundations and showcasing practical applications in brain tumor modeling, particle separation in a Stokesian fluid, and crystal formation on molten metal.
Councilmember Vanshi Goyal facilitated an engaging Q&A session, where Dr. Biros addressed queries with patience and sincerity. The seminar concluded with a stimulating intellectual discourse between the speaker and JUIT’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. R.K. Sharma. Attended by over 80 students and faculty members, the session garnered accolades from the Head of the CSE-IT department and JUIT’s Vice Chancellor.
This success owed much to the invaluable guidance of Vice Chancellor Dr. R.K. Sharma, faculty advisor Prof. (Dr.) Vivek Kumar Sehgal, and the dedicated SIAM JUIT Chapter Council. The event stands as a testament to JUIT’s commitment to fostering intellectual discourse and pushing the boundaries of knowledge in collaboration with eminent figures in the field.
