National Seminar on Indo-Western Shared Perspectives Held at IIAS, Shimla

Shimla, June 20, 2025 — A two-day national seminar titled “Shared Fiscal and Cultural Perspectives between India and the West: Gandhi, Kumaraswamy, and Tagore” was organized at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, on June 17 and 18. The seminar brought together eminent scholars to delve into the philosophical and socio-cultural exchanges between India and the West.

Prof. R.K. Mishra from the Department of Political Science, Lucknow University, inaugurated the event and emphasized the need to redefine contemporary youth discourse in the context of Indo-Western thought. He highlighted India’s folk life and the creative energy rooted in its youth traditions. The session was presided over by Prof. Shashiprabha Kumar, Chairperson of IIAS, who stressed on the revival and application of Indian knowledge traditions.

Former CSDS professor Abhay Kumar Dubey described the role of language in diversifying Indian philosophical traditions in Indo-Western dialogues. Research papers were presented on a range of topics, including tradition and modernity (Dr. Neelay Upadhyay), aesthetic vision of Kumaraswamy (Dr. Neeraj Kumar), ethnic cultural contributions (Dr. Sumel Singh Sidhu), youth and cultural identity (Dr. G.B. Harish), and the concept of subjectivity (Dr. Priyanka Vaidya).

The valedictory address was delivered by Prof. Ambika Datt Sharma from Sagar, who emphasized understanding Indo-Western perspectives through the lens of Vedic concepts and Indian geo-cultural philosophies. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by the convener, Prof. Brijesh Pandey.
