Book Review: Chandausi Junction; Vandana Bhagra, Publisher & Freelance Editor, Shimla

Chandausi Junction by Prof. Shankar Sahay and Preeti Sahay is a remarkable collection of short stories that takes readers on a nostalgic journey through a bygone era. It was a delight to receive a signed copy from Prof. Shankar Sahay, whom I recently connected with on a shared writers’ platform. The book, with its simple yet profound storytelling, held my attention from start to finish during two enjoyable afternoon sittings at Books & Brews Cafe. Each of the stories, though light in nature, carries deep meanings and life lessons that resonate emotionally with the reader.

The stories in Chandausi Junction are set in a time when India was either on the brink of independence or had only been free for a few decades. Spanning from the early 20th century to the end of the millennium, these stories capture the essence of journeys taken across the country, both literal and figurative. They offer a glimpse into the lives of individuals navigating the complex social, cultural, and emotional landscapes of the time. The interaction between characters and the empathy displayed at various stages of the stories adds an emotional depth that is rare in modern-day narratives.

What stands out in this book is the way the authors touch upon various life issues, offering subtle yet powerful guiding principles. The simplicity of the writing style makes it accessible, but the underlying depth of meaning makes it a compelling read for readers of all ages. The characters in the stories are well-crafted, and their emotional arcs are both relatable and thought-provoking. The way the authors depict human emotions and relationships is commendable, making it a book that evokes introspection. The illustrations in Chandausi Junction are a delightful addition, enhancing the stories and offering young readers a visual connection to accessories and elements they may not have encountered before, adding value and depth to the narrative. However, the design element and placements could have been better adjusted.

When I asked Prof. Shankar Sahay about the choice of the title Chandausi Junction, he explained that Chandausi is a town from where his father and forefathers hailed, and the term ‘junction’ symbolizes the interconnection between all the stories. Each story is linked in such a way that characters from one story may find resonance in another. For instance, the protagonist in ‘Daura’ can easily be imagined as the head of a family in ‘Parvarish’ or ‘Imtihaan’, showing the seamless transition of characters and their lives over time.

Though the book is a delightful read, it would have benefitted from more careful proofreading, as some errors, such as the misuse of punctuation marks in the final story, detract from the otherwise smooth flow. Nevertheless, this is a book that appeals to readers of all generations, especially the younger audience, who will gain a glimpse into the experiences of their parents or grandparents. The stories might even remind them of the tales passed down from their elders, with some reflecting the very experiences they might have heard about.

Chandausi Junction is a timeless collection that offers both enjoyment and insight into the rich tapestry of Indian life through the lens of its history and people.
