International Senior Citizen Day held at Shoolini University

The Legal Aid Clinic of the Faculty of Legal Sciences at Shoolini University, in collaboration with the District Legal
Services Authority, Solan, organized an event to commemorate International Senior Citizens Day.
The event, which was aimed to raise awareness about the rights, challenges, and welfare of senior citizens in the society, commenced with an insightful address by Mr. Vineet Kumar, Assistant professor,
Faculty of Legal Sciences, the convener of the event.
He explained the purpose of the gathering, setting a reflective tone by sharing a poignant story that highlighted the various challenges faced by senior citizens today. His narrative underlined the importance of empathy, respect, and support.

Mansha, a student of BALLB, presented an overview of the history and significance of Senior Citizens Day, offering a contextual understanding of the day. Ananya, a student of BALLB, addressed the gathering about the various legislative provisions designed to protect and support senior citizens, ensuring that budding lawyers are aware of the rights and the legal safeguards available to the senior citizens. Anshika, another student of BALLB, emphasized on the human rights of senior citizens, highlighting the critical need for society to respect and uphold these rights.
Dr. Swati Soni, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Legal Sciences, provided an in-depth analysis of the social welfare legislations in India and aimed at the protection and welfare of senior citizens. She discussed key
laws such as the Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act, 1956, the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Soni emphasized that the legislation mandates children, regardless of gender, to maintain their parents equally. She also elaborated on various government policies formulated to support senior citizens, urging the audience to recognize their duty as responsible citizens to care for and appreciate the elderly.
The event concluded with a summary of the key points shared by the speakers, delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Nandan Sharma. He encapsulated the essence of the discussions, reiterating the importance of legal and social frameworks in protecting the rights and dignity of senior citizens. Prof. Dr. Sharma also emphasized that older people are a valuable resource for any society and aging is a natural phenomenon.

An effort to spread awareness on International Senior Citizens Day

Legal Aid Clinic of Shoolini University in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority, Solan organized an event on the occasion of International Senior Citizens Day. The aim of the event was to raise awareness about the rights, challenges and welfare of senior citizens in the society. The event began with an inspiring address by Vineet Kumar, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law and Convener of the event. He explained the purpose of the event and shared a touching story that highlighted the various challenges faced by senior citizens in today’s times. His story emphasized the need for empathy, respect and support towards the elderly.

Ananya, another BALLB student, informed the gathering about the various legislative provisions made for the protection and support of senior citizens, so that future lawyers could become familiar with the rights and legal safeguards of senior citizens. The programme concluded with a summary of the key points by Prof. (Dr.) Nandan Sharma. He summarized the gist of the discussions and reiterated the importance of legal and social framework to protect the rights and dignity of senior citizens. Dr. Sharma also pointed out that the elderly are a valuable resource for any society and ageing is a natural process that presents both opportunities and challenges. He mentioned that as per the 2011 census, India has 104 million elderly people aged 60 years and above, which is 8.6 percent of the total population. Among the elderly, women outnumber men. Increase in life expectancy, decline in joint families and breakdown of social fabric have led to loneliness and neglect among senior citizens.
The National Elderly Health Care Programme and Health and Wellness Centres under the Ayushman Bharat programme provide dedicated health care to the elderly in primary health care settings. At the end of the programme, the vote of thanks was given by Assistant Professor Palak Sharma, Faculty of Law.
The programme was a great success, which brought out in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by senior citizens and the importance of legal and social support systems to overcome these challenges
