Importance of Statistics explained

The Department of Basic Sciences, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni celebrated National Statistics Day at the university campus. Professor Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, Vice Chancellor of the university was the Chief Guest during the function.
Since 2007, National Statistics Day has been celebrated in India on June 29 in recognition of the contributions made by Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics and economic planning. The event was celebrated this week at the university.
Addressing the participants, Prof. Chandel remembered Dr. Ronald Fisher, who is known as the father of Statistics. He also remembered the contributions of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. He talked about the importance of statistics in every field including agriculture. He urged the students to use statistics tools and use data to solve everyday problems. Prof Chandel was of the view that the use and misuse of statistical data is the responsibility of the researchers.
Earlier, Dr. RK Gupta welcomed the participants and gave a brief background about Statistics Day. Expert lectures were given by Dr. Manish Sharma from Sher-e Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Srinagar. Dr Sanjeev Chauhan, Director of Research and Dr CL Thakur, Dean College of Forestry also addressed the students on different aspects of statistics. A quiz competition was organized on the occasion in which five teams from different departments of the university took part. The team from the department of Social Sciences and the College of Horticulture jointly bagged the first prize. The students and faculty of the department also presented a song on statistics which was appreciated by everyone. Dr KK Raina, PI IDP delivered the vote of thanks. Dr. Manish Sharma, Dean, College of Horticulture; Dr. Ashu Chandel, Dr. Anju Sharma, Dr. Geeta Verma and Heads of different departments also attended along with the students at the event.
