The School of Journalism and New Media at Shoolini University organised a session on Google fact checking for the students of the School.
The key speaker of the session was Ms Madhur Singh, a senior journalist, writer and editor with the World Economic Forum, a fact-checking trainer with the Google News Initiative’s training network, and a curator at the Khushwant Singh Literary Festival.
The session was inaugurated by Prof Vipin Pubby, Director, School of Journalism and New Media. He explained why it’s important to check and cross-check facts before filing any news report.
Ms Madhur conducted two brief sessions. The first session was mainly about how to detect fake news and unrelated photographs being circulated over social media and other platforms through Google. Tools and various open platforms were also taught to the students.
“A reverse image search is an unbelievably easy and fun way to counter misinformation and we must push the pedal on climate awareness, including among the young”, she said.
The second session was about how climate change myths can be busted with statistics. She also suggested some websites to check the facts before passing them forward.
The session was attended by Associate Director Mr Neeraj Kumar, Assistant Prof Dr Nisha Kapoor, Assistant Prof Dr. Ranjna Thakur, Assistant Prof Indu Negi and Assistant Prof Parth Sharma at the School of Journalism and New Media, along with all the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the School.
