Shimla’s prestigious Bishop Cotton School (BCS) witnessed a spectacular performance this week as they presented the iconic 1970s musical ‘Grease’ in collaboration with Auckland House School. This magical moonlit outdoor production showcased the exceptional acting, musical, and dance talents of both institutions and was attended by a host of special guests, including Bollywood stars.
Nimrat Kaur, who made a special trip from Mumbai for the event, expressed her delight at visiting a school she had heard so much about. She shared her admiration for the children’s outstanding performance and even had an audience with senior BCS boys. During this session, she offered a sneak peek of her new film and talked about her career, playing a cop in the movie. She also met with HP DGP Sanjay Kundu to gather insights from an expert.
This joint production between the heritage schools marked a significant event. The Auckland House students took on the roles of the ‘Pink Ladies,’ while the Cottonians portrayed the ‘T-Birds’ gang, setting the stage ablaze for a joyful production.
Bishop Samantaroy, Chairman of the Board of Governors for both schools, praised everyone involved for orchestrating such a fantastic event, emphasizing that these children would remember this experience for the rest of their lives.
The musical ‘Grease,’ made famous by the film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, graced the BCS stage from 18th to 20th October 2023. The school even constructed a special stage on the first flat for this occasion.
On 25th October ’23, there will be a special highlight show at the Gothic Gaiety Theatre in Shimla.
This event beautifully showcased the talents of students from Bishop Cotton School and Auckland House, featuring actors, dancers, and musicians from both institutions as they recreated the famous 1950s musical ‘Grease.’
The BCS school band, led by Mr. Reuben John, along with the choir and music band, performed all the tracks live, with support from choirs from each school, eliminating the need for backing tracks.
The intense rehearsals over the past few months involved the dedicated efforts of teachers and students. The BCS Art Department, school carpenters, and students worked tirelessly to create and design the stage, along with props, including a 1950s red car, a 50s Diner café, and a jukebox, among others.
‘Grease’ presents a fun storyline set in an American high school in the 1950s, revolving around teenage angst and first love, featuring catchy tunes and iconic dance routines.
Grease Background:
‘Grease’ is a musical with music, lyrics, and a book by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The musical is set in 1959 at the fictional Rydell High School in Northwest Chicago and revolves around the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as ‘greasers.’ While ‘Grease’ was a Tony-nominated Broadway hit in 1972, the 1978 film adaptation became a massive sensation, launching the careers of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
