Shimla, July 31, 2025: Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, is set to host the prestigious B.L. Modi Memorial Inter School English Elocution Competition on August 1st and 2nd, 2025, from 9:00 am onwards. The two-day event will witness vibrant participation from leading schools of Shimla and nearby areas. Mr. Abid Hussain Sadiq (IAS) will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Now in its 27th edition, the competition was instituted in memory of the late Mr. B.L. Modi, an esteemed Mathematics teacher and Housemaster at Bishop Cotton School (1966–1982), remembered for his discipline, dedication, and influential teaching. His legacy continues to inspire generations of students.
The event aims to promote eloquent English speaking and intellectual exchange among students through various engaging formats like poetry, prose, drama, and turncoat debates. Divided into five categories—from junior poetry recitation (Class 4–5) to high-stakes turncoat sessions (Class 11–12)—the competition provides a unique platform for students to test their oratorical skills, critical thinking, and spontaneity.
Participating schools include Auckland House School (Boys & Girls), Chapslee, Convent of Jesus & Mary, both DAV Schools (Lakkar Bazaar and New Shimla), Loreto House Tara Hall, Shimla Public School, and the host school.
At least two awards will be presented in each division: Best Speaker and Most Promising Speaker. Beyond competition, the meet fosters camaraderie, confidence, and a celebration of language as an intellectual art form.
