Shimla, September 29: The government has initiated an investigation into the functioning of Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU) and three private Ayurvedic medical colleges. The Education Minister, Rohit Thakur, has constituted an investigation committee chaired by Education Secretary Rakesh Kanwar to ensure uniformity in fees at private medical colleges. The investigation is focused on allegations of reducing state quota seats and charging higher fees under the management quota.

During the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly, questions were raised regarding the functioning of MMU and the colleges. In response, the Education Minister ordered an investigation. He stated that the fee structure of medical colleges is approved by the Education Department. Several irregularities have been reported in the medical college located in Solan district. There has been a decrease in the state quota seats by 50%, and there is a significant disparity in fees.

The five-year medical course fee is approximately INR 50.82 lakhs, while it doubles to around INR 95.83 lakhs in the management quota. The Education Minister mentioned that the investigation will also include tuition fees, building funds, and hostel fees. The reasons behind the reduction in state quota seats will also be examined.

Efforts will be made to refund the excess fees collected from students. Additionally, provisions for increasing these seats may also be explored. Geospatial surveys of universities and medical colleges in the state will be conducted to determine their biological status.

These steps are aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in the functioning and fee structure of private medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh.
