Public Will ‘De-notify’ Congress Government, Says Jairam Thakur

Chamba, October 17: Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur on Saturday accused the Congress government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, of failing to fulfil its election guarantees and discontinuing welfare schemes. He warned that any new districts created for political reasons or against public sentiment would be reviewed if the BJP returned to power.

Addressing public representatives and party workers during his visit to Chamba, Thakur alleged that the government was raising the issue of new districts to divert attention from its failures. He cautioned against restructuring districts by splitting or combining Assembly constituencies without considering public opinion.

Thakur also accused the government of sidelining schemes such as Grihini Suvidha, Shagun, Sahara, Himcare and Swavalamban, which he said had benefited poor and needy families. Referring to the closure of institutions opened under the previous BJP government, he said the public would respond politically to the Congress government’s decisions.

At gatherings honouring newly elected panchayat representatives in Koti in Churah and Bhalei in Dalhousie, Thakur congratulated the representatives and urged them to prioritise rural development and public welfare. He claimed that the recent panchayat and urban local body elections reflected growing public support for the BJP. He also accused the state government of attempting to delay panchayat elections, saying the BJP had fought a legal battle to ensure they were held.

During a press conference, Thakur criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his allegations concerning EVMs and electoral processes, and questioned the Congress’s stance on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He also welcomed several Congress workers who joined the BJP, attributing their decision to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the party’s policies.

Several BJP leaders attended the events, including Kangra-Chamba MP Dr Rajeev Bhardwaj, Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan, former Assembly Speaker and Sulah MLA Vipin Singh Parmar, and MLAs Hans Raj and D.S. Thakur.
