Expert Committee constituted to examine matter for setting up of Centre of Excellence (Specialized Departments) in Medical Colleges

On the directives of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state government has constituted an Expert Committee to examine the proposal for setting up Centre of Excellence (Specialised Departments) in all Government Medical Colleges of the state, including Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialty, Chamiana.
A spokesperson of the state government said that the initiative is aimed at providing the highest level of specialised medical expertise, advanced patient care and promoting targeted research in Government Medical Colleges. The proposed Centres of Excellence would focus on specialised and multidisciplinary management of complex, rare and critical diseases, thereby reducing the need for patients to travel outside the state for advanced treatment.
The Committee will identify two to four departments in each Government Medical College, including AIMSS Chamiana, which have the potential to be developed as Centres of Excellence. These specialised centres will be envisaged to provide advanced multidisciplinary treatment for complex, rare and critical diseases requiring expertise, technology and facilities beyond the scope of conventional departmental services.
The Expert Committee will be headed by Dr. D.K. Verma, Vice Chancellor, Atal Medical Research University, Nerchowk, Mandi, as Chairman. Dr. Gopal Beri, Director, Medical Education & Research, Shimla, Dr. Milap Sharma, Principal, Dr. RPGMC Tanda, Dr. Brij Sharma, Principal, AIMSS Chamiana, Dr. Balbir Verma, Professor (General Medicine), IGMC Shimla and Dr. Puneet Mahajan, Professor (General Surgery), IGMC Shimla have been nominated as Members. The Additional/Joint Director, SLBSGMC Nerchowk, Mandi will function as Member Secretary of the Committee.
The Committee will also assess the requirements for establishing and strengthening these Centres of Excellence, including cutting-edge medical technology, upgradation of infrastructure, additional specialised manpower, equipment, training and other financial implications. The recommendations will provide a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening tertiary and super-speciality healthcare facilities in the State.
The spokesperson said that the proposed initiative would help create specialised centres equipped with modern technology and multidisciplinary expertise, while also strengthening the academic and research environment in the state’s medical institutions. It is expected to facilitate collaboration among different specialties and promote focused research in areas requiring advanced clinical expertise.
The Expert Committee has been directed to submit its detailed report within two weeks.
The spokesperson further said that strengthening specialised healthcare within the state is an important priority of the government. The establishment of Centres of Excellence in Government Medical Colleges would provide patients access to advanced and multidisciplinary treatment closer to their homes, while simultaneously contributing to medical education, specialised training and targeted research in Himachal Pradesh.
