KAASHHIM: Bridging Kashmir and Himachal Through Folk Traditions

Shimla, Sept. 19 : A spectacular cultural evening, “KAASHHIM – An Amalgamation of Folk Cultures”, was organised under the theme “A Journey from the Valleys to the Himalayas”, celebrating the rich and diverse folk traditions of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

The programme, a collaborative initiative of the Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson Society (TBMS) and St. Thomas’ School, Shimla, provided a vibrant platform for young performers to showcase their cultural heritage and highlighted the importance of preserving and passing traditional art forms on to future generations. Thirty students from St. Thomas’ School, accompanied by five teachers, participated in the cultural exchange programme at a TBMS school in Kashmir.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Rahul Rex Kaul, Director, TBMS Society and Secretary, Diocese of Amritsar, CNI. He welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, dignitaries, parents, teachers and students, and appreciated the efforts of the young performers and organisers in presenting the cultural richness of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

The performances took the audience on a memorable journey from the valleys of Kashmir to the majestic Himalayas. The evening featured a vibrant welcome dance, melodious Himachali and Kashmiri folk songs, and “Himshir”, a unique fusion of Kashmiri and Himachali folk dances. The programme culminated in a grand finale featuring Rouf and Himachali Nati, reflecting the cultural harmony and shared traditions of the two regions.

Adding a special musical dimension to the evening, renowned Kashmiri singer Owais Pandit made a surprise appearance and enthralled the audience with his performance.

The event was graced by Mr. Sujit Kumar, IPS, IGP Kashmir Zone, as the Chief Guest. He appreciated the impressive performances by the students and commended the efforts of the teachers and organisers. He also praised the confidence, enthusiasm and talent displayed by the young performers.

The Guest of Honour, The Rt. Revd. Manoj Charan, Bishop, Diocese of Amritsar and Chairman, TBMS Society, addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of respecting, celebrating and preserving diverse cultural traditions. He appreciated the students for their outstanding performances and acknowledged the dedication of the teachers and organisers.

The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Mrs. Sharon Nanda, Principal, St. Thomas’ School, Shimla, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, dignitaries, organisers, teachers, parents and students for their presence, encouragement and support. She observed that events such as KAASHHIM help build lasting bridges through culture, education, friendship and collaboration.

The evening concluded with a felicitation ceremony honouring the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour and other distinguished dignitaries for their presence and encouragement.

KAASHHIM emerged as a memorable celebration of the cultural heritage of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, bringing together tradition, talent and youthful energy in a vibrant journey from the valleys of Kashmir to the Himalayas.
